Sacred statues, historic tools, old books: Ötztal’s Heritage Museum gives fascinating insight into how people used to live and work in Ötztal. All the buildings are original and in their original locations. Christian has a special connection with one of the houses: “My ancestors used to live in this house until the mid of the last century”, the Ötztal native explains. For this reason the preservation of these old buildings is a matter very close to his heart. “These old houses contain our past and our memory. They tell the story of Ötztal and its people”. 

The museum exhibits are also all originals. “Visitors are always impressed by the many historical objects that fill the rooms and display cases. They really add an authentic atmosphere to the museum”, Christian says. People often ask where these historic artifacts come from. “Once in a while people unearth old treasures when clearing out houses of elderly relatives, and they bring them to us”. Thanks to these findings the Ötztal Heritage Museum keeps receiving new relics from the past.

“Many people yearn for bygone times. We have visitors of all ages and nationalities who come in search of the simpler, more stress-free life of the old days”, Christian continues. But since living just in the past is not fun, the Ötztal Heritage Museum keeps things lively with exhibitions of present-day artists from the region.

Originalität im Fokus

Das Ötztaler Heimatmuseum ist einzigartig: Die Häuser sind allesamt Originalbauten und befinden sich an den Originalschauplätzen. Und nicht nur die Häuser, auch die Ausstellungsstücke sind allesamt echt. „Besonders beeindruckt sind unsere Gäste von den vielen Originalen, die die Zimmer und Schaukästen unseres Museums füllen“, erläutert Christian. Woher die prachtvollen Zeugen der Vergangenheit kommen? „Bei Hausentrümpelungen und bei der Erbübernahme von alten Häusern finden die Bewohner der Region immer wieder Dinge aus der Vergangenheit. Diese bringen Sie zu uns – manche davon sind wertvolle Überbleibsel, andere einfach nur alte Sachen.“ Und dank der vielen Tiroler, die immer wieder Fundstücke zum Museum bringen, wird es stets mit neuen Erinnerungen an die früheren Tage gefüllt.
